How Do Y Strainers Work in Pipeline Systems?
Y strainers operate based on a simple mechanical filtration principle:
1. Fluid enters the strainer body through the inlet.
2. The flow is directed through the filter screen, which captures solid particles based on the mesh size.
3. Clean fluid exits through the outlet and continues downstream.
4. Debris collects inside the Y-leg pocket, assisted by gravity.
5. The screen is cleaned manually or via a blow-off valve as needed.
Operational Principles
1. When the Y strainer is correctly sized, it creates very minimal pressure drop.
2. Gravity helps debris settle in the Y-leg, making filtration more effective.
3. It can be installed in both horizontal and vertical pipelines, but downward installation gives the best results.
